Alexandria's Spring Kickoff: Events Worth Knowing About

Jo Hvezda

Spring in Alexandria means the lakes are waking up, and so is the calendar. Whether you're a longtime local or just settling into the area, here are a few things worth having on your radar this time of year.

Minnesota Fishing Opener. Mid-May marks the unofficial start of the lake season for a lot of families. Docks go in, boats come out of storage, and the marinas start filling up. If you're shopping for a lake home, this is also when you'll start seeing listings show the water at its best.

Farmers markets and downtown events. Alexandria's downtown starts picking up with seasonal markets and community events as the weather warms. It's a great way to get a feel for the town if you're new to the area or considering a move.

Ice-out watch. Depending on the year, ice-out on the chain of lakes can happen anywhere from late March to mid-April. It's a small thing, but it matters if you're timing a showing or a move-in around lake access.

Spring cleanup and dock season. If you're a homeowner, this is typically when docks, lifts, and other lake equipment come out of winter storage. If you're buying, it's worth asking a seller about the condition and age of dock systems before ice actually clears, since it's easier to inspect once everything is in the water.

If you're new to the area or just want a local's perspective on what's worth checking out this season, I'm always happy to share recommendations — lake life is one of my favorite topics.
